Use List.of() to Create an Unmodifiable List
List.of() creates an unmodifiable list in a single line. It is ideal for fixed values such as supported formats, roles, or configuration options.
Keep these restrictions in mind:
- add(), remove() and set() throw UnsupportedOperationException.
- null elements are not accepted.
- The contained objects can still be mutable.
Available since Java 9, it is usually clearer than creating a mutable list and wrapping it with Collections.unmodifiableList().
|
import java.util.List;
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] args) {
List<String> formats = List.of("JSON", "XML", "CSV");
System.out.println(formats); // [JSON, XML, CSV]
try {
formats.add("YAML");
} catch (UnsupportedOperationException e) {
System.out.println("The list cannot be modified");
}
}
}
|
|
Takeaway:
Use List.of() when you need a concise list whose structure must not be modified.

Replace Nested Conditions with Guard Clauses
What would you improve in this code?
|
|
Before
public void sendWelcomeEmail(User user) {
if (user != null) {
if (user.isActive()) {
if (user.getEmail() != null) {
emailService.sendWelcomeEmail(user.getEmail());
}
}
}
}
|
|
What’s the issue?
Each condition adds another level of indentation. The method’s main action becomes buried, and the code gets harder to scan as more rules are added.
|
|
After
public void sendWelcomeEmail(User user) {
if (user == null) {
return;
}
if (!user.isActive()) {
return;
}
if (user.getEmail() == null) {
return;
}
emailService.sendWelcomeEmail(user.getEmail());
}
|
|
Why it’s better:
Guard clauses handle invalid cases immediately and keep the successful path visible. Each rule is also easier to identify, change, and test.
Takeaway:
Exit early when a condition prevents the method from doing its job. Keep the successful path simple and visible.
